Filter cleaning guide
How to clean Pentair cartridge filters
Pentair cartridge filters are everywhere on residential routes, and most service problems trace back to the same thing: cartridges that get surface-rinsed instead of deep-cleaned, so oils and fine dirt stay packed in the base of the pleats and flow drops week after week.
This guide covers a proper deep clean for Pentair cartridge elements using nothing but garden hose pressure, and where the HALO360 fits into the job.
Step by step
Cleaning a Pentair cartridge, step by step
Step 1
Shut down and open the tank
Turn the pump off, release pressure at the air relief valve, and open the filter tank. Lift the cartridge (or cartridge cluster) out and set it where runoff can drain away from the pool.
Step 2
Connect the HALO360 to a garden hose
The HALO360 runs on standard garden hose pressure, 40 to 110 psi, with a 5/8 or 3/4 inch hose up to 50 feet. Open the integrated ball valve and check the pressure gauge.
Step 3
Work the pleats top to bottom
The focused 25-degree fan spray from the six custom-engineered nozzles drives water to the base of the pleats, lifting out packed dirt, oils, and debris without damaging the media. Rotate the cartridge and work each band until the water runs clear.
Step 4
Inspect before reinstalling
Check the end caps, the band, and the pleat fabric for cracks, tears, or flattened pleats. A cartridge that is damaged or has years of service should be replaced rather than cleaned.
Fit
Does the HALO360 work on Pentair cartridges?
Yes. Pentair cartridge filters use standard pleated cartridge elements, which is exactly what the HALO360 is built to clean. It connects to a regular garden hose, needs 40 to 110 psi, and its 25-degree fan spray reaches the base of the pleats where a garden-hose-and-thumb rinse never gets.
On multi-cartridge Pentair tanks the time savings compound: cleaning every element in a four-cartridge cluster by hand is the slowest job of the day, and the HALO360 cleans each element deeper and faster while saving up to 150 gallons of water per filter compared with cleaning by hand.
Pro tips
From the field
- Mark the cleaning date on the end cap with a paint pen so the next tech knows the history.
- Rotate two cartridge sets on high-load pools: one in service, one clean and dry. Drying fully between cleans helps release oils.
- If flow recovers only briefly after cleaning, the media is likely at end of life; recommend replacement honestly.
Questions
Pentair cartridge FAQ
- How often should Pentair pool filter cartridges be cleaned?
- A common rule is every three to six months for a typical residential pool, or whenever the filter pressure gauge reads about 8 to 10 psi over its clean baseline. Heavy debris, algae treatment, or high bather load shortens that interval.
- Can I clean a Pentair cartridge with a pressure washer?
- No. Pressure washers shred pleat fabric. Use garden hose pressure. The HALO360 is engineered to get a deep clean from a standard hose at 40 to 110 psi without damaging the filter.
