Filter cleaning guide

How to clean Pentair Clean & Clear cartridges

Pentair's Clean & Clear line is one of the most installed cartridge filter families in residential pools, and the Plus models clean four elements at a time, which makes filter day a real chunk of a route stop.

Here is the full deep-clean process for Clean & Clear cartridges, and how the HALO360 turns the four-cartridge job from the worst stop of the day into a quick one.

Step by step

Cleaning Clean & Clear cartridges, step by step

  1. Step 1

Shut down and open the tank

Turn the pump off, release pressure at the air relief valve, and open the filter tank. Lift the cartridge (or cartridge cluster) out and set it where runoff can drain away from the pool.

  2. Step 2

Connect the HALO360 to a garden hose

The HALO360 runs on standard garden hose pressure, 40 to 110 psi, with a 5/8 or 3/4 inch hose up to 50 feet. Open the integrated ball valve and check the pressure gauge.

  3. Step 3

Work the pleats top to bottom

The focused 25-degree fan spray from the six custom-engineered nozzles drives water to the base of the pleats, lifting out packed dirt, oils, and debris without damaging the media. Rotate the cartridge and work each band until the water runs clear.

  4. Step 4

    Inspect before reinstalling

Check the end caps, the band, and the pleat fabric for cracks, tears, or flattened pleats. A cartridge that is damaged or has years of service should be replaced rather than cleaned.

Fit

Does the HALO360 work on Clean & Clear cartridges?

Yes. Clean & Clear cartridges are standard pleated elements, and the HALO360 cleans standard pleated elements on regular garden hose pressure. Its 25-degree fan spray reaches the base of the pleats on every band of the element.

On a Clean & Clear Plus tank the multiplier is the point: four cartridges per clean, a deeper and faster clean per cartridge, and up to 150 gallons of water saved per filter versus hand cleaning. That is the difference between dreading filter day and scheduling it.

Pro tips

From the field

  • Keep the four Plus cartridges in their original positions or rotate them deliberately; even wear extends the set's life.
  • Check the internal air bleed tube screen while the tank is open; a clogged screen mimics a dirty cartridge.
  • Reset and note the clean pressure after every service so the next visit's gauge reading means something.

Questions

Pentair Clean & Clear cartridge FAQ

How often should Clean & Clear Plus cartridges be cleaned?
Watch the gauge: about 8 to 10 psi over the clean baseline is the standard service point, commonly every three to six months on residential pools, sooner under heavy load.
Is it worth deep-cleaning all four cartridges every time?
Yes. Cleaning only the dirtiest elements unbalances flow through the cluster and shortens the set's life. With the HALO360 the full four-cartridge clean is fast enough that there is no reason to shortcut it.
